# Claude vs Clay: Why Go-to-Market Teams Are Moving Prospecting Into Claude

> Claude vs Clay for lead generation: why a connected Claude gives go-to-market teams more room, from a sentence instead of a table to paying per result.

**The short answer.** Clay is a table-based platform for data workflows, with paid plans from $185 a month. Claude connected to a go-to-market data layer such as Layrcake does the same core jobs (find, enrich, verify, research) from plain English, and goes further in one conversation: buying signals, social posts and the people who engaged, drafted campaigns and replies, with a person approving anything that sends. You change the workflow with a sentence, pay per result with no platform fee, and use the same connection in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT or Cursor.

## Do you need Clay if you have Claude?

For most prospecting, no. Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, connected to live go-to-market data over MCP (Model Context Protocol), finds companies and people, gets and checks work emails, researches accounts and drafts outreach from one request. There is no table to build and no plan to buy before you start.

The difference is the shape of the work. Clay calls itself "Infrastructure to get any data, run agentic workflows, and launch GTM plays", and its workspace is a table you build columns into ([clay.com](https://www.clay.com/)). Claude's workspace is the conversation. You say what you want, it plans the calls, reads every result, and adjusts as it goes.

|   | Claude + Layrcake | Clay |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You build the workflow by | Writing a sentence | Building a table and its columns, with an AI copilot to help |
| Change it by | Writing a different sentence | Editing the table or its functions |
| Judgement on results | Claude reads each result and decides the next step | Rules and AI columns you configure |
| Pricing | Pay per result, misses free, no platform fee | Free plan; paid plans from $185 a month |
| Where it runs | Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex | Clay, plus its connectors and plugins |

## Change the whole workflow with one sentence

In Claude the workflow is the request, so changing it costs a sentence. In one of our runs we asked for UK software companies hiring salespeople. Then we swapped one line, and Claude ran a different search entirely:

**The swapped request**

```
Find me 5 companies like our best customer, [customer website]: same country, similar size, sales team growing. One line each on why they match.
```

It matched companies on country, size and a growing sales team, and explained each pick. 30 credits. Nothing was rebuilt; the next request could be something new again. That is the flexibility that matters day to day: the method fits the question you have this morning, not the table you built last month.

## Judgement at every step, not just at the end

Claude doesn't only fill fields. It reads what comes back and decides what to do next, the way a good researcher would. From our logged runs:

**It priced its options first.** Asked for a call brief with a 35-credit budget, Claude saw the all-in-one option would use 33 credits, chose a cheaper route, and delivered the brief for 11.5.

**It caught a moved job.** When an email came back on a different company's domain from the one the search listed, Claude flagged it as a likely job move and left it off the list.

**It kept the right people a keyword would miss.** Reading 563 people who engaged with a LinkedIn post, it kept 26 sales leaders, including four Chief Commercial Officers whose titles never used the words in the brief.

> **Why this matters.** Every list has edge cases. In a conversation, Claude handles them as they come up and tells you what it did. You don't have to predict them in advance.

## The whole loop in one conversation

Prospecting doesn't stop at an enriched list. With Layrcake, the same conversation continues past it:

| Step | What Claude does | From our runs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Find | Companies and people from a plain-English brief | 20 heads of sales from 91 matches, 4 credits |
| Enrich and verify | Work emails, then a second check on every address | 16 found, 15 kept after the check |
| Signals | Hiring, funding and news, plus public posts and the people who engaged | 4 companies hiring sales in the last 2 days |
| Research | Dated facts about each company, each with its source | 3 companies, 12 sourced facts |
| Draft and approve | A campaign draft; launch needs a signed-in person's approval | 15 leads, three-step sequence, 0 credits |
| Replies | Read replies and draft answers for you to approve | get_replies and reply_to_thread |

*Runs on 1, 2, 3 and 12 October 2026.*

One connection, one prepaid balance, one place to approve. The [lead generation guide](https://layrcake.dev/guides/claude-lead-generation) shows a full run end to end, and the [go-to-market stack guide](https://layrcake.dev/guides/claude-go-to-market-stack) maps each layer.

## Your method travels with you

A Claude workflow lives in files you own: a skill file for the method, a CLAUDE.md for your ICP and rules. Commit them to a repository and every teammate, and every client workspace if you run an agency, gets the same method. The [Claude Code setup guide](https://layrcake.dev/guides/claude-code-for-gtm-engineers) has the files.

The data connection travels too. Layrcake is the same MCP server in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex, so the assistant you prefer next year still runs this year's method.

## How do the costs compare?

With Layrcake you pay per result and nothing for a lookup that finds nothing. There's no platform fee and no seat price. Our logged runs: 31 credits ($0.31) for a verified sales leader at each of five accounts, 78.75 credits for eight checked emails and three researched openers, 145 credits ($1.45) for 20 leads taken to 15 ready-to-send drafts. Prices as on the run days; [current prices here](https://docs.layrcake.dev/pricing.html).

Clay's pricing, from its own page on 12 October 2026: a free plan with 100 data credits and 500 actions a month, Launch from $185 a month and Growth from $495 a month on monthly billing. Since March 2026 Clay also charges nothing when an enrichment returns no result ([Clay pricing](https://www.clay.com/pricing)).

If your team already runs workflows in Clay, Clay has a connector for Claude too, so Claude can sit on top of what you've built. Everyone else can start in Claude today: [connect Layrcake](https://layrcake.dev/claude) in about two minutes.
