Can ChatGPT do sales prospecting?
ChatGPT can do sales prospecting once it has live data to work with. On its own it writes well and reasons well about who to target, but its knowledge of companies and people is out of date, and it can't check whether an email address works. Connect a sales data source and ChatGPT calls it for you: it searches, reads the results and hands back a shortlist.
We use Layrcake for that. It plugs into ChatGPT as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) plugin and covers company and people search, work emails and verification, company research, and public LinkedIn, X and Reddit posts. The tools are the same in every assistant that speaks MCP, so the results below come from our runs of the same five prompts with the same tools on 2 and 3 October 2026.
How do you connect ChatGPT to sales data?
Turn on developer mode, add the data source as a plugin, and sign in. It takes about two minutes on a paid ChatGPT plan on the web.
| Step | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Settings → Security and login | Turn on Developer mode. It lives under Security, not Apps, which is the step people miss. |
| 2 | Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins) | Choose +. |
| 3 | New plugin | Name it Layrcake and paste https://mcp.layrcake.dev/mcp under Connection, then Create. |
| 4 | Layrcake sign-in | Sign in and approve access. There is no API key to paste. |
| 5 | A new chat | Open the tools menu and add Layrcake. |
Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan and your workspace's policy. Steps as of our last check, 11 September 2026.
Or let ChatGPT walk you through it:
❯ I want to add Layrcake as a custom MCP plugin. You can't add it yourself, so walk me through it one step at a time and wait for me to confirm each: 1) Settings → Security and login → turn on Developer mode. 2) Go to Plugins and choose +. 3) Name it Layrcake, add a description, and under Connection paste https://mcp.layrcake.dev/mcp, then Create. 4) Approve access when I'm sent to Layrcake. 5) In a new chat, open the tools menu and add Layrcake. Then check the Layrcake tools are available. One thing to know: ChatGPT applies its own safety filters to connected tools and sometimes declines email-finding or outreach steps. If that happens, Codex, OpenAI's agent for developers, comes with paid ChatGPT plans and runs the same tools. The setup guide has both.
1. Find companies that are buying right now
A company hiring salespeople has said, in public, that it needs more pipeline. Ask for those companies and a reason to call each one.
❯ Find UK software companies with 50 to 500 staff that are hiring for sales roles or raised funding recently. Give me the 5 strongest, with the signal, its date and a one-line reason each is worth contacting this week. Budget: 35 credits. In our run the search came back with four UK software companies, each with a sales job posted in the previous two days, ranked by how hard they were hiring. The top one had posted 15 jobs in a month. Another was hiring for a region it hadn't sold into before. 24 credits.
2. Get a one-page brief before a sales call
Swap in the company and its website, and you have the research you meant to do last night.
❯ I have a call tomorrow with the head of sales at [company] ([website]). Give me a one-page brief: what the company does and how it's doing, anything recent worth mentioning, who I'm likely speaking to and what they've been posting about, and three smart questions to ask. Budget: 35 credits. Our brief came back with the company's funding to date, a revenue figure marked as an estimate, two dated moves from the last four months with sources, the three people who run sales by region, a recent post from one of them, and three questions that only make sense if you've read the rest. 11.5 credits.
3. Find the right person at each target account
You have the accounts. You need one name per company and an address that won't bounce.
❯ Who runs sales at each of these companies? I want one person per company with a verified work email: [website 1], [website 2], [website 3], [website 4], [website 5]. Budget: 40 credits. One sales leader per company, every email valid
| Sales Director | expense-management platform | Valid email | |
| Head of Sales | Microsoft 365 governance software | Valid email | |
| Chief Revenue Officer | recruitment software | Valid email | |
| Chief Revenue Officer | home-moving services | Valid email | |
| Chief Revenue Officer | AI video platform | Valid email |
Where a company had more than one sales leader, the answer said which one it picked and why, so you can swap.
4. Turn one popular LinkedIn post into warm leads
People who react to a post in your space have just told you what they care about. Pick someone your buyers follow, and ask for everyone with the right title who engaged.
❯ [Person] posts a lot about [topic], and my buyers follow them. Look at their recent LinkedIn posts ([profile URL]), pick the one with the most reactions and comments, and find everyone who engaged with it whose headline says head of sales, VP sales, sales director or CRO. Read all of them, not a sample. Tell me the cost before the full read. Budget: 280 credits. Our run compared seven recent posts, took the one 563 people had engaged with, sampled it, and quoted 254 credits to read everyone. With a 260-credit cap it read all 563 in the background in about two and a half minutes and kept 26 sales leaders. Six had titles a keyword match would have missed, such as Chief Commercial Officer, and were kept by a title check. 241 credits in total, the priciest job here and the one with the warmest leads.
This reads public posts only, so your own LinkedIn account isn't used. More on that in our LinkedIn guide.
5. Find buyers who are fed up with a competitor
People post when their software lets them down. Ask for those posts, and how to start a conversation without a pitch.
❯ We sell [what you sell]. Find recent posts on LinkedIn, X or Reddit from people frustrated with [competitor] or tools like it. Show me the 5 best, why each is a good lead, and how you'd open a conversation without being pushy. Budget: 20 credits. Most of what the search found was marketing or praise, and the checks threw it out. What was left was short and strong: a Reddit thread from a lone salesperson openly shopping for a replacement, with their stack and budget spelled out, and a LinkedIn post ranking the tools in the category. The advice for the Reddit thread: answer the question they asked and leave the pitch out. 11 credits.
What makes a ChatGPT prospecting prompt work?
Every prompt above says four things: the result you want ("the 5 strongest", "one person per company"), the filters you would use yourself, what you want next to each result ("with the signal and its date"), and a credit budget. Leave one out and the answer gets vaguer or costs more. The prompt pack has these and one more, with the parts to change in brackets. They work the same in ChatGPT.
The budget matters most. The assistant checks what each call will cost and stops before it runs out, and a search that finds nothing costs nothing.
What does it cost?
The five jobs cost between 11 and 241 credits each, about $0.11 to $2.41 at $0.01 per credit, at the prices on the days we ran them. ChatGPT itself needs a paid plan for developer mode.
| Job | Credits |
|---|---|
| Companies buying now | 24 |
| Call brief | 11.5 |
| Right person at 5 accounts | 31 |
| Warm leads from one post | 241 |
| Competitor complaints | 11 |
Prices at the time of our runs, 2–3 October 2026. Lookups that find nothing are free.
These prompts research and draft. Creating a campaign is a separate step, and launching it asks a signed-in person to approve before a single email leaves.

Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT find leads?
Not from its own knowledge, which is out of date. Connected to a live sales data source through an MCP plugin, ChatGPT can search companies and people, find and verify work emails, and read public LinkedIn posts.
How do I connect ChatGPT to a sales database?
On a paid plan on the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings → Security and login, add the data source's MCP server URL as a plugin, sign in to approve access, then add it from the tools menu in a new chat.
What is a good ChatGPT prompt for sales prospecting?
Say the result you want, the filters you'd use yourself, what you want next to each result and a credit budget. For example: find UK software companies with 50 to 500 staff hiring for sales roles; give me the 5 strongest with the signal and its date; budget 35 credits.
Will ChatGPT send emails to prospects?
Not in this setup. The prompts research and draft. Creating a campaign is a separate step, and launching it needs a signed-in person's approval.
